In the Carson City community, many repeat offenders have addiction or mental health issues. The vast majority of criminal cases the District Attorney’s Office handles include drug and alcohol abuse. For this population, combatting the cycles of repeat offending means addressing the underlying cause of the criminal behavior. There are two programs that can be used to address this cycle—Western Regional Drug Court and Misdemeanor Treatment Court. Ultimately, it is important to identify appropriate candidates for these programs to end the cycle. In my experience on the bench, as a Juvenile Special Master, I identified the appropriate candidates for Juvenile Drug Court and Family Dependency Court to help stop cycles of addiction-based behaviors. As Assistant District Attorney, I have seen first hand the need for these programs to be used to help keep our community safe. As Justice of the Peace, I will use these programs for appropriate candidates to help keep our community safe and address addiction in the community.
